Vatican – Measures to minimize the spread of COVID-19

30 maart, 2020

The designated operator of the Vatican, Poste Vaticane, asks us to inform other Union member countries and their designated operators of measures taken to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The government considers Poste Vaticane to be a provider of essential services.  As such, Poste Vatican will carry on operating and provide its services as far as it is able to.

Despite a reduction in staff resulting from the situation, Poste Vaticane has put in place a skeleton service enabling continuity to be maintained in the provision of essential services.

The current situation will have repercussions in terms of quality of service for all types of inward and outward mail. Under these circumstances, Poste Vaticane will no longer be able to guarantee delivery service standards (delivery times and other quality performance parameters) applicable under UPU rules, and is invoking a case of force majeure for quality of service.

Owing to insufficient transport capacity following the cancellation of many international flights, Poste Vaticane is currently unable to transport mail (letter-post and parcel-post items) to a growing number of countries. Poste Vaticane is therefore no longer accepting postal destined for the Union member countries concerned until further notice. The list of destination countries affected is liable to change on a daily basis.

Poste Vaticane thanks all Union member countries and their designated operators for their understanding. It will update them via EmIS once the situation has returned to normal.
